How 3 farmers transitioned to plant-based agriculture

Length: 2 videos: 6 min. + 16 min.

Helping farmers transition from animal agriculture to veganic farming is key to creating a plant-based food system. And Rebecca Knowles and her team at Stockfree Farming are leading the way! They are currently assisting 20 farms in the UK and Ireland that are transitioning from animal agriculture to stockfree organic techniques, providing them with free support ranging from agricultural advice to business planning to finding end markets for their new crops. In the first short video, you’ll hear about Stockfree Farming’s vision from Rebecca. And in the second video, you’ll be taken on-site to see stockfree farms in action, and hear from 3 farmers who made the transition, including their motivations for leaving animal agriculture behind to adopt plant-based farming.

Rebecca Knowles

Rebecca Knowles is the founder of Stockfree Farming. From a farming background, Rebecca got her degree in Agriculture from the University of Aberdeen in Scotland and worked on both livestock and arable farms: “I became a farmer because I love animals. Over a decade later, I became a vegan for the same reason – I love animals!” Rebecca founded Stockfree Farming in 2020 to assist farmers and crofters throughout the UK and the Republic of Ireland who are looking to transition away from livestock farming into fairer, greener livelihoods.

Coppicing and woodchips to build soil fertility

Length: 55 min.

Woodchips are an incredible way to build long-term soil quality, and they’re 100% plant-based too! Though any wood-based material needs to be used very strategically in a farm or garden setting, in order to reap the benefits without the drawbacks. In this talk, Iain will share how he has turned low-grade land into high-quality soil by using agroforestry techniques. He’ll share how they’ve added rows of trees between the vegetable fields, which they can coppice and use to make ramial chipped wood (from branches under 7cm in diameter), and how they incorporate this in the green manure stage of their crop rotation. Plus he’ll show you how they reclaim woodchips from local tree surgeons, and compost it in piles to create a high-quality compost that they can use to amend their fields or grow seedlings.

Iain Tolhurst

Iain Tolhurst has been at the forefront of the UK organic farming movement for 50 years and he is an internationally renowned speaker on sustainable farming. His 8-hectare farm is Certified Stockfree Organic and produces a wide range of produce. Tolhurst Organic farm is a model of sustainability, incorporating green manures, diverse crop rotations, woodchip composts, and agroforestry practices in the vegetable system. He also pioneered woodchip substrates for propagation to move away from peat-based materials. Iain Tolhurst is the author of several books, including Growing Green.
