A journey: from dirt to self-sufficiency in 3 years

Length: 34 min.

If you’ve ever dreamed of becoming self-sufficient and growing most of your own food, this talk by Armando Cruz will provide some inspiration! Armando will be sharing how he started from bare lifeless soil 3 years ago at his homestead in Portugal, and how he revitalized his soil by making compost from materials that he diverted from the waste stream, including 9,000 kilos of coffee grounds! Armando now gets over 60% of his food from his own abundant gardens, wild harvesting, and trading harvests with other people in his community!

In 2021, Armando Cruz moved from the USA to his childhood home in Portugal, and started a gardening and homesteading project called Horta Harmonia. The goal is to promote biodiversity, conserve and be immersed in nature, and achieve food and seed sovereignty. Armando has revitalized the soil by creating compost from local materials and is now growing the majority of his own food.
